First Day of Racial Segregation in Humanities

Today, Tuesday, October 23, 2013, was the first day that Ms.Vallillo's humanities class studied Racial Segregation in south africa. The day started of with a Do-Now about a picture a bench in South Africa. On the far right of the bench, 2 white people were staring away from a pair of african natives, who seemed to no problem sitting with them. This picture led the class to a deep discussion about why the white people were being so rude.

After the class had the discussion about the Do-Now, Ms.Vallillo  made the students go in a gallery walk throughout the class room. The classroom was filled with posters and artifacts that represented segregation in south africa and students had to write down there findings and questions about what they saw. One of the most interesting artifacts was a big piece of paper that had the names, ages, and causes of death of all of the victims in The Soweto Uprising in South Africa, 1976. In this mass killing 100+ people dies including young babies.

With the information the class already knew about the killing, each pair of students in the class made a popplet chart with there questions and what they already knew about it. Even thought it was the first time most of the kids had used popplet, most of the students did a great job expressing what they knew.

Just before the class ended, Ms.Vallillo assigned the students to answer out a few questions about what they learned in the class. Some of the questions were, "What images stood out to you on the gallery walk?" and "How does this relate to out last unit, Government Systems?".  The first day of Racial Iniquity in humanities was great. All of the students learned a lot, and are ready for the rest of the unit.

  1. Today was really fun at the gallery walk because I learned I a lot of things. One thing that I thought was interesting was that they had different toilets for them. I wondered why because it didn't make sense to me and it is weird. Keep up the good work for the blog it looks really nice.

  3. I really enjoy today's humanities class. The new information introduced about discrimination and South Africa, as an example, is a subject that I, and probably the other students, are looking forward to learn and explore more about. It may be a very serious and heavy topic, but it helps us understand the world of today and answer our question: What causes poverty? I think that it will be much easier to understand about this topic after we first understood all the government systems. Also, I love gallery walks, because it makes us start connecting and getting "in the mood" of the class and we learn in a different way. Jack, I really enjoyed the way you explained the gallery walk, by describing how it looked and what was our job at it. Great work!

  4. Today during the gallery walk we had so many pictures about thesse things, and it felt so heart breaking to see what the white were doing to the black! Oh my goodness can't you just look at a check board. It is a mix of black and white and they are fare towards each other. On the bright side I glade will be learning about this history and how it was made!

  5. Today's class was very interesting with so many different and new informations. Even though it was interesting, there were some parts that made me sad because of racium that has happened in different countries. The gallery walk made me almost explode when I saw the super long list of just, people, dying because they were non-white people. We also got some information for the big question we have: Who caused poverty? We know now that poverty is not a mistake, and people are causing it to happen and that could change. It also connected to the government systems on how each government treat the citizens in a different way.
Jack, I really like the way that you were very detailed about the specific things we did during class, such as the gallery walk and the popplet. I can't wait to see tomorrow's post!

  6. I agree with how today the students, like myself, learned a lot due to the gallery walk and the popplet project. This unit will surely be good because of how we are prepared for the truth. Segregation is a very sad and violent thing and Ms. Vallillo put it in a very calm way for the students that were scared and heart broken by all of it. With this start, I, and countless others, are ready to learn. I really like how there were photos of what happened and how you explained the day, but you could put captions to the text to point out where the photos are, For example, (photo up and to the right). Overall, you did a fantastic job in presenting your ideas in an interesting way and I hope to see more work like this. Keep on try, Jack!

  7. Today during the gallery walk there were so many pictures and good quotes to look at. It was very sad how there was so much racism in those times. One of the pictures that outstanding was the one that showed to toilettes and in one of them there was a poster saying white people only and in the other one there was another one that said black people. It's very interesting that things have changed so much! In the other hand I look forward to learn so much new things about government and how things worked in the old times!

  8. Today in Humanities class after started the new unit I was really interested and enjoyed our Gallery walk. I found it a very harsh and big subject that were going to study but can't wait to be an expert about this. A lot of the pictures or passages were about sad things like separation of white and black people even in a toilet, black people crossing the border, all the protests, and the unfairness. In my opinion who ever started with the big issue of racism was a really unnecessary thing to do because it doesn't matter! The thing that surprised me was how much black people died at the Soweto uprising by gun shots and even babies died. I really thought this was unfair and very sad about all the victims that were good people. I really learned a lot of new things about this sad topic and love Gallery walks. Jack, in my opinion this was a VERY good start for our class scribe and I congratulate you for the great work and how you really described our class. Keep it up and I hope it keeps on going this good!

  9. I really liked your post because you took pictures of exactly what we were doing and didn't stray off the topic. I agree with Claudia that you could've added captions to the pictures, but I did like how you put your perspective into the post. I also agree with Claudia about how this is going to be a very important topic and I think that using a good class scribe will be great to express that. I thought your post was very thoughtful and straight to the point. Good Job.

  10. One thing that I really enjoyed this humanities class was the gallery walk. I liked the gallery walk because we really got to see how it used to be in Africa and how the natives were treated. One thing that really caught my attention was the list of the people who had died. It interested me because it said how they died and how old they were. I think we should keep on learning about the Racial Segregation. Jack I really liked how you organised your paragraphs and ideas. Like, by putting pictures that represent your paragraph. Good job on today's post!

  11. I really enjoyed my class of Humanities today, because we used Popplet!
I think Popplet is a very interesting way of expressing ideas, in a VERY organized way. I also liked learning about the Soweto Uprising in South Africa, 1976, and I am very enthusiastic about getting an expert at this topic. Jack, you are a very good class scribe! I am proud of you for being the first one from our class to post it on the blog! I loved everything about the post.

  13. I think the best part of the day was making the popplet because my partner and I would write down what we learned and ask questions about it. We ended up with a huge popplet. A question I asked was, "Why did people treat other people so badly if they were a different skin color?"
Jack, you are very good at capturing every detail of what we did in class today. You are a great class scribe. Congratulations!
